CD Reviews for 03/10/10 - Deadstring Brothers, Shannon McNally & Hot Sauce

Compact Capsules for Mar 10, 2010

Deadstring Brothers
Sao Paulo
Bloodshot Records BS159

Recently caught an interview with Detroit R&B legend Andre Williams who said what separates Motor City music from that of other mega-music metropolises is the groove. When it comes to Detroiters the Deadstring Brothers, an Exile on Main Street meets a Gram Parsons-styled Cosmic American Music collision is what these ears have always heard. They stay the course on their latest and while they still tend towards the Stonesy side of the house, the Detroiters cop a serious rock & roots groove thing, with a little Memphis soul for good measure, on Sao Paulo. Shannon McNally & Hot Sauce
Coldwater
Self-released

Haven't heard too many women cover Waylon Jennings hits, but on the new Coldwater from the now Mississippi-based Shannon McNally she tackles "Lonesome On'ry & Mean" with confidence and gusto to spare. It's a standout cut on an album full of them. McNally has always been one of those singers who can belt it or turn it down to a simmer without missing a beat. With her multi-talented band Hot Sauce lock-step the entire way, her versatile and soulful voice is right at home be it blues, honky tonk or the straight-up singer/songwriter fare comprising Coldwater.
