9 pm Providence Cutting Sessions: JAZZ PROGRAM
“Providence Cutting Sessions" is a new Jazz Program at AS220. It will run every second sunday of the month following the "Songwriters in the Round". The goal of this program is to inspire others to contribute to and support a growing jazz community. Students of all levels can contribute to this jazz community through performance, composition, and appreciation. The “Providence Cutting Sessions” is a program recently created by the Artistic Director of AS220, Bert Crenca, and a trio of local jazz musicians, Nick Sollecito, Mike Bernier, and Alex Chapman. This program’s mission is two-part. First, to give jazz musicians a venue to display their art and talent; second, to compose a new repertoire of jazz standards. “Providence Cutting Sessions” will display new and original jazz compositions by local musicians. These compositions will mainly be in the style of the “Real Book,” which contains hundreds of well-known jazz standards. This program welcomes jazz musicians to come to performances and sit in with the house trio. All instruments are welcome. Original charts will be made available at performances and online in .pdf format (go to www.anglesideside.com for more info). Available charts have been transposed in keys C, B flat and E flat. We welcome composers to submit original songs to be performed (email providencecuttingsessions@gmail.com for more info). I hope this program will be of interest to jazz musicians through out the state. Please encourage students to get involved in this program. More info can be found on our website: www.anglesideside.com If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at providencecuttingsessions@gmail.com http://www.provcuttingsessions.com/

From his first recordings as a leader in 1967 fronting The Dirty Blues Band, through his multiple W.C. Handy award winning releases with his current band The Mighty Flyers, to his countless appearances both live and on record with legendary blues figures, Piazza has set a standard for harmonica virtuosity that has established him as one of the most influential living blues harp players. The Mighty Flyers epitomize the very best in blues: fresh, swinging, tasteful, exciting and creative... a combination of low-down Chicago grit, suave West Coast swing and jazz, and the rhythmic drive of the best early R&B and rock & roll. Quite simply, Rod Piazza and The Mighty Flyers are one of the best, most experienced, and most distinctive bands in blues today. ELAN MEHLER QUARTET MONDAY JULY 7 XXODUS CAFÉ | 5PM
A towering if as yet little-known talent, Elan has a compositional touch and style that has seen his work declared reminiscent of greats from Bill Evans to Claude Debussy. This is contemporary music recorded wholly live and in the best traditions of jazz and improvisation. Scheme For Thought, Mehler’s latest release, is a particularly special affair: intimate, elevated and beautiful. It's a rarity to savor, right from the opening strains of the lullaby-like “Little Lost” to the closing track, a version of “Elvis Presley Blues,” a classic from the First Lady of alt. country, Gillian Welch, taken to new territory by Elan and his Quartet. http://myspace.com/elanmehlerquartet

JOSÉ JAMES QUARTET TUESDAY JULY 8 XXODUS CAFÉ | 5PM

MAURICE BROWN SATURDAY JULY 12 WATERPLACE PARK BANK RI STAGE | 6PM
"Maurice Brown is one of the most exciting young trumpeters in jazz- be it New Orleans or New York. His improvisations are fresh, his chops dynamic and he's writing what could very well become a new generation of hard-bop-meets-new-grooves standards," wrote Jason Koransky, editor for DownBeat Magazine. In 2004, Maurice self-produced his debut album, Hip to Bop which breaks down the generational divide by bringing Jazz into the present with fresh sounds, while staying true to Hard Bop roots. http://www.mauricebrown.net/

JON HENDRICKS SATURDAY JULY 12 WATERPLACE PARK | 7:30PM
Born in Toledo, Ohio, in 1921, Jon Hendricks has had a long, distinguished career as a professional musician and educator. The seminal moment in Hendricks' career came in 1957 when he teamed with Dave Lambert and Annie Ross to form the legendary vocal trio Lambert,
Hendricks & Ross. With Jon as lyricist, the trio perfected the art of vocalese, or crafting songs and lyrics out of the note sequence of famous jazz instrumental solos, and took it around the world, earning them the designation of the "Number One Vocal Group in the World" for five years in a row from Melody Maker magazine. After six years the trio disbanded for solo careers, but not before leaving behind a catalog of legendary recordings, most of which have never gone out of
print. Countless singers cite the work of LH&R as an influence, from Van Morrison to Al Jarreau to Bobby McFerrin. http://www.myspace.com/lamberthendricksross
