Castro was voted Blues Artist of the Year in 2006 by the readers of BluesWax, the largest subscribed blues publication in the world. In May 2008, the awards continued at the Blues Music Awards held on May 8, when Castro won "BB King Blues Entertainer of the Year" and his new CD, "Painkiller" won for Contemporary Blues Album of the Year. Prominent observers of the blues such as B.B. King and Carlos Santana have all along extolled Tommy's dynamic musicianship and pointed to him as being among a small few that represent the future of the blues.
